Good News for Christian music

Oli Nicholls, the singer songwriter behind One Step Lantern, has won London School of Theology’s ‘Crossing Song’ competition, which sought to find the best new worship song covering an area that has very few songs written about it.

“Good News”, the third track on One Step Lantern’s debut album 5+2 was the winning song! “Good News” covers a theme of poverty, justice and responding to the poor and marginalised. Drawing on passages from Isaiah, Amos, Micah and Matthew, it seeks to connect worshippers with God’s heart on the brokenness of our world, moving them into action so that “the glory of the Lord will be revealed”.

Oli was given his award by
Graham Kendrick, “the father of modern worship”, today [29th June 2013]. His prize included a new guitar, a bundle of books reflecting the art of writing and membership of the Association of Christian Writers.

The judging panel for Crossing Songs included world renowned worship writer Graham Kendrick, social activist Andy Flannagan, London School of Theology lecturer Sam Hargreaves and internationally acclaimed music director and producer Steve Thompson.

Oli said, “I’m so thrilled to have won this competition, and to have helped plug a worship song gap on the theme of justice and poverty, something at the very heart of One Step Lantern.

“We just don’t seem to sing that many songs in church about responding to the poor and the justice heart of God, but it’s clearly such a huge part of what following Christ is about. Modern worship writers need to respond to that and equip the church with songs that teach and empower people on the theme of justice and responding to the vulnerable, marginalised and downtrodden.

“The vision of ‘One Step Lantern’ is to connect worshippers with the justice heart of God – both practically through sales, but also by affecting and changing people’s hearts through music, and moving them into action. So it’s just great to have that recognised and encouraged.”
